Weeple People: Despite the aggressively cheery text and cluttered format, Gillespie's ""sciencing unit"" presents some visual puzzles worth poring over as it challenges children to ""sort out the Weeple People"" in a series of exercises in recognizing the common factors of sets. If Toopeds, Jolls, Circloons and Fraxes prove a cinch to identify -- ""take a deep breath and turn the page!""; the Tweeps, Wumps and Whammynackers will be enough to flummox all but the most keen-eyed classifiers (and the answers are in code).

For large-scale construction, the Workshop for Learning Things, Education Development Center, 55 Chapel Street, Newton, Massachusetts 02160, produces a Mechanical Building Set. This is a sort of giant "Erector" set which children can use to build bridges, carts, derricks, pendulums, geometric shapes, and gear systems.

Science Education 1965 and 2005: Myths and Differences, George E. Hein
http://george-hein.com/downloads/sciEd1965HeinTERC2005.pdf
The Arithmetic Teacher, 38, 3, 11/1990: ESS Tangram Cards: The package includes three sets of tangram puzzle cards with accompanying tangram pieces. Sets 1,2, and 3 get increasingly more challenging to solve. However, within each set of cards students may work the cards in any order. Set 1 has seventeen patterns requiring students to use two, three, and four tangram pieces. Set 2 has twenty-seven patterns all requiring five pieces to be used. Set 3 has seventy-seven patterns involving all seven pieces. Since the three sets vary greatly in difficulty, they can be used from preschool to adult levels, lending challenge and fun for students of many ages. This facet is especially advantageous because many ability levels are present in most classrooms. Students may begin with any set depending on their own ability level. They place the tan- gram pieces over the printed design on the cards. The next more challenging step is to re- create the design off the card. In set 3 are six cards with designs printed in reduced scale, which forces the player to reproduce the design off the card. To make the task more difficult, students could recreate the pattern by making substitutions with equivalent pattern pieces. New designs can be created on paper and filed for future use. These same steps can be used for all three sets of cards to make the cards' use more long lasting. Because tangrams are puzzle games, they promote among students a risk-free spirit of competition either with their own ability or with that of others in a group. The cards permit flexibility in that many students can use this activity at one time. Each classroom would need several sets of tangram puzzle pieces. Tangrams develop good problem-solving skills by encouraging students to make a plan, use trial and error, and practice perseverance. Students discover that the learning and the fun are de- rived in the process and not always in just get- ting an answer.
